Horned Lizard Species of North America

In the table is the current list of 17 species of horned lizard, genus Phrynosoma, with their scientific names and common names.  Also included is their country of occurrence (United States, US; Mexico, MX; Canada, CAN).  This list with their description was first published in the February 2020 issue of Phrynosomatics, the official newsletter of HLCS.

The full article written by Dr. Wade Sherbrooke from where this information is based can be found in this link:

Current Names: A Guide to Recent Name Changes of Horned Lizard Species by Dr. Wade Sherbrooke

There are 9 species in the United States, 16 in Mexico, and 1 + 1 (?) in Canada (with P. douglasii apparently extirpated in Canada; Powell and Russell 1998). Those common names not in bold font are suggested alternatives.

The photos are of adult horned lizards in their habitat.
